Phoukhoun farmers suffering from water shortage

Upland cultivation on 478.7 hectares of land in Phoukhoun district, Luang Prabang province, is suffering from a lack of water

District Governor Mr Viengthong Hatsachan recently went to meet residents of Suanmark and Namsuan villages to learn about the water problem. Some 70.5 hectares of upland fields owned by 110 families in Suanmark village lack sufficient water, as do 38.4 hectares of land used to grow chillies. And in Namsuan village, 31.9 hectares of farmland do not have enough water. Upland cultivation by 877 families in 17 villages of Phoukhoun district has been slowed on an area of 478.7 hectares due to the onset of the dry season. Mr Viengthong urged local authorities to seek solutions and to help villagers to grow dry season crops to replace rice lost during excessive rainfall in the wet season.
