Dr. Khamla Inkhavilay is the Deputy Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Academic Services and the Director of the Center of Excellence in Environment at the National University of Laos (NoUL). The Center of Excellence conducts research, teaching, and training on soil, water, air, microorganisms, contaminants and residues in food and agricultural products. The Center also plays an important role in the management of intellectual property rights, planning cooperation between research and technical services, as well as supervising the work of Chinese research centers, environmental excellence centers, and other research centers of National Universities.

Dr. Khamla is an expert in land snail biodiversity, a field of research which not many scientists are choosing. In 2019, he published a significant book documenting 231 species of land snails in Laos, i.e. significantly more than the 79 species that were recorded in previous documentations. In a publication of October 7th 2024, he announced the discovery of two new snail species, further highlighting the ecological importance of Laos. Snails play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and maintenance of moisture in ecosystems, while also serving as a food source for various animals. However, some species, particularly in the genera Hemiplecta and Cychloporus are threatened by human consumption and trade.

Snail mucin has been noted for its ability to hydrate skin. In addition, it may have anti-aging properties as it is made up of compounds including peptides and antioxidants that promote collagen synthesis and elasticity. Based on his wealth of knowledge, Dr. Khamla is researching the possibilities to use snail slime to create a skin care serum.
