Dr. Phetlasy Souladeth: Researcher Preserving Ethnobotany and Biodiversity in Laos

Dr. Phetlasy Souladeth, Assistant Professor and Head of the Scientific Research and Academic Services Division at the Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos (NUoL), has dedicated her career to enhancing agrobiodiversity through her research on plant species. Her journey began with receiving the Darwin Scholarship, for which she trained after graduating with her bachelor’s degree. This scholarship provided her the opportunity to intern and conduct research in England, ultimately leading her to focus on ethnobotanical studies.

In the few pasts, she had the opportunity to be a co-advisor for a master’s degree student from Sarakham University, Thailand, they embarked on an exciting research project focused on ethnobotanical plants, specifically examining how exceptional plant varieties are utilized differently by the Hmong and Lao communities in Bolikhamxay Province Lao PDR. They gathering invaluable insights into traditional uses of plants, ranging from culinary applications to herb medicinal. This work also part of an initiative to create book A checklists of plants in Laos, aimed at conserving biodiversity and promoting awareness of its importance.
