Today, is the 26th Lao Wildlife and Aquatic Animal Conservation Day. At this occasion, the Government of the Lao PDR plans to release 62 million aquatic and terrestrial animals into the wild, in order to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife.
At Pha Khao Lao, we highly welcome this important initiative. At the same time, we urge everyone in Laos – citizens, policymakers, various organizations, and the private sector – to work together to protect forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems. Without these essential habitats the animals that are being released today will not survive in the future.
Pha Khao Lao is committed to the sustainable use of natural resources. We believe that agrobiodiversity is fundamental for persevering ecosystems and natural habitats. Agrobiodiversity is the opposite of monoculture (the cultivation of only one crop on a piece of land) and has been practices by communities in Laos since centuries. These communities have relied on a wide range of species for food, medicine, clothing, construction, decoration, and culture.
