The government has authorised about 2.4 billion kip for forest restoration in the Huaygnang-Dongmakkhay Botanical Garden to promote forestry and ecological studies as well as visitation to the area. The signing of a funding agreement took place last week in Vientiane between the Environment Protection Fund, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry\u2019s Forestry Department, and the Ministry of Natural Resources\u2019 Department of Planning and Cooperation. Of the authorised funding, 1.6 billion kip will be earmarked for tree planting to replenish the botanical garden with a variety of native and foreign species.\u00a0The Department of Forestry will implement this project over three years from now until May 2022.\u00a0The National University of Laos (NUOL) Faculty of Forestry Science will undertake the second project valued at 839 million kip over two years and plant a diverse range of trees to conserve the biodiversity of native species along with the study of local ecological systems.\u00a0The faculty will endeavour to develop the garden into a living lab for forest science subjects and for use by other NUOL faculties while raising awareness of forest conservation.\u00a0Dongmakkhay is classified as a forested area but a shortage of funding for its management and protection has led to some deterioration.\u00a0<\/p>\n
