{"id":9797,"date":"2019-11-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phakhaolao.la\/news\/laos-eyes-upgrade-of-organic-agriculture-to-build-trade-competitiveness\/"},"modified":"2024-10-21T11:46:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T11:46:50","slug":"laos-eyes-upgrade-of-organic-agriculture-to-build-trade-competitiveness","status":"publish","type":"news-post","link":"https:\/\/phakhaolao.la\/en\/news\/laos-eyes-upgrade-of-organic-agriculture-to-build-trade-competitiveness\/","title":{"rendered":"Laos eyes upgrade of organic agriculture to build trade competitiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That\u2019s the message at the 7th Lao Organic Agriculture Forum (LOAF) under the theme: \u2018National Strategy for Green Development and International Competitiveness\u2019 taking place in Vientiane from November 28-29.\u00a0Organisers say it is an important platform to encourage public-private partnerships and dialogue on the development of organic agriculture.\u00a0Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr Bounkhouang\u00a0Khambounheuang; Deputy\u00a0Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr Somchit\u00a0Inthamith; Resident\u00a0Coordinator of United Nations\u00a0Laos, Ms Sara Sekkenes;\u00a0and representative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Ms Miho Shirotori are co-chairing the forum.\u00a0Delegations from development partners, international organisations and farmers\u2019 groups are also attending the event.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Bounkhouang said, \u201cLaos has strong potential for organic agriculture but is still struggling with various challenges because most organic farmers lack the\u00a0technical and financial ability\u00a0to compete on price, quality and quantity in overseas markets.\u201d\u00a0Meanwhile, Mr Somchit said the government needed to actively support farmers, especially with funding for infrastructure development and marketing to promote the international competitiveness of Lao organic agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Since the forum\u2019s establishment in 2012, there have been six LOAF meetings with each focusing\u00a0on a specific theme, ranging from ways to create organic value chains to institutional requirements for organic agriculture and its sustainability.\u00a0Laos\u2019 organic agriculture development is based on the 10-year Agriculture Development Strategy to the Year 2025 and Vision to the Year 2030, issued in 2015 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.\u00a0The 10-year strategy aims at having 2 per cent of Laos\u2019\u00a0production area certified as\u00a0organic by 2025 and having\u00a0organic markets established in all provinces, while goals for the 2030 vision are yet to be determined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last decade has witnessed a dramatic growth in global consumer demand for organic agricultural products.\u00a0Despite concerted efforts\u00a0by producers, processors, businesses, NGOs and government policymakers, Laos\u2019 organic exports to international markets especially tea, coffee and rice along with fresh fruit and vegetables to regional markets have not yet reached their full potential.\u00a0Previous LOAF meetings\u00a0have identified financial and\u00a0technical challenges related to complying with organic standards set by buyers.
