Dr Lampheuy Kaensombath is a researcher in animal nutrition and farm management who decided to invest her knowledge into achieving meaningful transformation in rural communities in Laos. She is convinced that academic knowledge achieves its true value only when translated into practical solutions that improve real life.
From 2016 to 2019, she served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, NUoL. During that time, she strengthened her expertise in project evaluation, planning, and monitoring through a series of professional workshops. In 2020, she stepped beyond the classroom to work with the Association Anoulak on a community-based initiative aiming to find sustainable market opportunities for traditional handicrafts. By supporting better organization, enhancing product quality, and improving access to buyers, she helped transform traditional knowledge into a reliable source of income. This strengthened economic resilience and helped to reduce pressure on natural resources, thus contributing to biodiversity conservation.
The Thaphaiban New Normal Crafting Group was officially established in 2023. All activities take place in one of the three village clusters inside the Nakai–Nam Theun National Park in Khammouane Province, Laos. The group produces baskets, sticky rice containers, bags, and other handmade crafts. These activities create sustainable income opportunities for its members. In 2025, the group was able to operate independently, demonstrating that when communities are empowered with knowledge, organization, and market access, they can preserve their cultural heritage, strengthen livelihoods, and build a confident, self-reliant future.
