Formerly, most people grew crops and raised animals just for their own consumption and to exchange with their neighbours. But now villagers in Saravan province are increasingly engaged in commercial production. Mr Sompong Keophiman’s household has been named a model family in Nakhonpheng district after successfully raising animals for sale. Mr Sompong decided to raise cows, goats, pigs and chickens, as well as grow bananas. This gave his family plenty to eat and he was able to save enough money to raise more animals. He now has 30 cows, 30 goats, 10 pigs, more than 300 chickens and seven fishponds. Mr Sompong said he received advice on animal husbandry from the Agriculture and Forestry office in Nakhonpheng district which was a great help and enabled his family to make a success of their farming endeavours and become a model family. He is open to helping other people to rear animals for sale so that they too can boost their incomes and rise above poverty.
