The ecology of Cardamom

Cardamoms are members of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) which distinctive and aromatic plant in Monocotyledon group

Cardamom Distributed to Laos with 32 species and 4 of cardamoms were recorded.

Commercial species are Paksong’s cardamom (Wurfbainia longiligularis) in Southern Laos and Guantong’s cardamom (Wurfbainia villosavar.xanthioided) in Northern Laos which popular cultivation in Laos . More than 1,000 ton of these two species are annually exported to international market, with the highest price around 450.000 kip/kg (buy in farm) for dry cardamom

People prefer to consume cardamom as medicine, herbs, food, etc. Also. Cardamom be important food source for insects and wildlife

At the moment, Cardamom is one of Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) which is harvesting more than conservation. The ecosystem balance has affected due to widespread of NTFPs and Cardamom. In order to make farmer understand more about NTFPs and biodiversity conservation, we should have more advertisement, and educated. The land ownership for cardamom production should be recognized at the community level and not at household level to promote sustainable development
