WWF-Laos is deeply saddened by the recent death of two Irrawady dolphins in the Mekong river

18 June of 2021, WWF-Laos is deeply saddened by the recent death of two Irrawady dolphins in the Mekong river, one discovered on June 14 and the other on April 23.

These river dolphins are an iconic species associated with the Four Thousand Islands (Siphandone), and their loss highlights how we must redouble our conservation efforts and continue to work with local communities and authorities to protect these and other important freshwater species.

WWF-Laos, through its project to improve management and sustainable use of fisheries and aquatic resources in Siphandone, is committed to contributing to the long term health of this unique natural ecosystem, the animals that inhabit it, and the future of the communities that depend on the river and its services for their livelihoods.
