EDL and THPC provide rice to flood-affected farmers

Flood-affected farmers of Saravan and Xekong provinces in southern Laos, whose crops were damaged in early September, have received a boost with the donation of rice and seeds by two power companies.

Theun-Hinboun Power Company (THPC) and its major shareholder, EDL-Generation, recently handed over 20 tonnes of rice and 10 tonnes of seeds to authorities of each province following an appeal by the government for assistance for the flood-hit communities. The total value of the donations was 418 million kip, and the funds were raised from different sources, including the sale of recycled metal from the Theun-Hinboun power station, collection of donations from EDL-Gen and THPC staff, and a contribution from the company’s disaster response fund. Speaking at the ceremony where the relief materials were handed over, Deputy General Manager of Theun-Hinboun Power Company (THPC), Mr Soulideth Baomanikhoth, said the donation was small compared to the scale of the natural disaster across the southern provinces, but this was a heartfelt gesture from the companies and their staff. “This small amount of relief can make a real difference for those families that receive the rice and seeds,” Mr Soulideth added.  Recently, THPC assisted farmers in Hinboun district of Khammuan province to upgrade their irrigation system to ensure the dry season’s yield is not affected, and they have enough water for crops planted in the coming months.
