Mr Xemeng Xong’s family in Namthuay village, Hom district, has been rearing cattle for sale and is earning up to 40 million kip a year. Mr Xemeng said his family used to live in a pitiable condition when their primary occupation was farming and manual labour in the fields and the rice they grew was insufficient for their needs.
In line with the government’s development policy, they started rearing cattle for sale and their prospects have improved considerably. Initially, Mr Xemeng bought just two cows and three buffaloes but now his family has over 40 cattle. He periodically gets his cattle checked for diseases to ensure they stay healthy. Mr Xemeng said every year he sells four to five head of cattle and buys calves from nearby villages to rear. This has enabled his family to earn 30 to 40 million kip a year. The income from the sale of the cattle has helped his family to rise above poverty and the village, in general, is enjoying greater prosperity.
