Sale of weavings fills pockets in Savannakhet

Weaving garments for sale is helping impoverished women in Khampanae village, Champhon district, Savannakhet province, to earn a living and improve their quality of life

Mrs Ning Phasouvor and her family decided to weave items for sale so they could have enough food to eat and earn a regular income. She said her family used to beg to get money but after she started work as a weaver her family gave up begging. In the past, many families in Khampanae village were unemployed and took to begging. They didn’t have enough to eat and lived in poor conditions. But a businessman offered to help them and encouraged families to raise animals, grow crops and weave items they could sell. Since then, the people of Khampanae village have had a better life, stopped begging, and are earning money from productive occupations. Mrs Ning said her family has joined a weaving group and they are now better off and no longer living in dire poverty.
