From farm to table: promoting sustainable agriculture among young Lao farmers

Panyanivej farm, located in Ban Samkhet, Sikhottabong , Vientiane, Laos,  began its activities in 2008 and was officially registered as an agriculture company in 2016. The farm focuses on organic cultivation, retail and wholesale sales, with an emphasis on kitchen garden vegetables, rice, and oyster mushrooms. The farm also offers learning programs on agriculture and traditional food preparation, as well as mindful arts and crafts. Visitors can learn to identify different plant species and to harvest vegetables directly from the garden. “From farm to table” is the motto of Panyanivej farm.

Somchit Phankham (nickname: Jit), the owner of Panyanivej farm, has created more than just an agricultural garden growing climate-resilient crops and domesticating wild foods: she has added value to local plant species and actively passes on knowledge about Lao plants and cuisine to the younger generation who are eager to learn.

Jit’s interest in seeds, soil, and Lao cuisine led her to question why Laos imports crops despite its ample farmland. For over a decade, she has promoted chemical-free agriculture with an emphasis on local rice varieties and native plants, showing Laos’ cultural and ecological diversity. Her aim is to establish a sustainable business that provides jobs for young people.
