Wravong Phrachanh

From Cartoon Drawing to Plant and Mushroom Illustration

Wravong Phrachanh has loved drawing and cartoons since she was young. Over the years, she has developed her artistic skills and continued creating and sharing her work through her page, This is WRA.

Her contribution to the Herbarium of Non-Timber Forest Products of Lao PDR opened a new chapter in her creative journey. For the first time, she had the opportunity to draw different plant and mushroom species for a scientific publication.

Some of the species were completely new to her. Before drawing them, she needed to learn about their shapes, characteristics, and distinctive features. This was a new challenge, but Wravong was willing to learn and improve. She combined her drawing skills with new knowledge about plants and mushrooms. Through research, practice, and careful observation, she gradually became more familiar with the species and was able to create the illustrations for the book.

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) have long been important to rural communities in Laos. They provide food and nutrition, traditional medicine, materials, and income, while also being connected to local knowledge and cultural practices.

Wravong’s story shows how an existing passion can grow through continuous learning. From a young person who loved drawing cartoons, she has developed her skills in a new direction, using her creativity to help document and tell the stories of plants, mushrooms, and other non-timber forest products in Laos.
